Grace and Psychology

By Rev Fr William Goh

Set of 6 cds

1.  The Right and Wrong Notions of Sin

Grace is opposed to sin.  By deepening our understanding of human freedom, we can better understand the nature of sin.  This talk will discuss the ultimate sin which is the sin against the Holy Spirit; the distinction between mortal and venial sin.  Whilst such a distinction is helpful, it has its limitations and can lead to legalism.  It is therefore necessary to clarify the wrong and right notions of sin.

2.  Is Sin Purely a Subjective Matter or Does It Have an Objective Dimension?

In Catholic teaching, sin is not simply left to the individual person to decide what is and what is not a grave sin.  When we speak of sin, we are dealing with divine truth. The Church as the guardian of Truth in matters of faith and morals provides us the objective dimension of sin independent of our preferences.  What are the implications of the Church’s pronouncement on the sinful nature of a particular act?  How do we reconcile the objective dimension of sin with that of the individual conscience, that is, the subjective conscience of man?

3.  Grace and the Exercise of Freedom

Theologically, as Catholics we share in the freedom of the children of God.  How then does grace influence our freedom with respect to election and sin? Specifically, we have to deal with the psychological process in the exercise of freedom.  Every free action is dependent on our fundamental option on one hand, and the concrete exercise of this personal basic option in our daily life.  These two aspects should work in perfect harmony but often there is a lack of integration.  What impacts this capacity to carry out the freedom of God is sin and our fallen nature.  Hence, grace is necessary to heal man of his inner division before he can live a life of integrity.

4.  Is Experiential Knowledge of Grace Possible?

Since grace is supernatural because of its divine origin, how can we have an experiential knowledge of it and recognize it as such?  Due to the complexity of our psychology, our biological, psychic, rational and spiritual functions are so interwoven that it is difficult to tell when grace is acting and when we are acting.   This calls for discernment as we try to see His presence at work in our conscience, faith, hope and love.

5.   Grace and its Healing Effects on the Human Person

Grace has to do with death and life.  By infusing into our souls His living and recreating grace, God heals us by forgiving and mitigating the effects of both original and personal sins.   But grace not only heals, it elevates us to share in the life of God which is the basis for our claim to being “sons/daughters” in and with the Son.  However, it can only take place if we do not resist His grace.  This is where the challenge is because man does not surrender easily to God.  We are paralyzed by fear and by our past experiences.  How does one let go and surrender oneself to God? How does grace renew the entire person bringing about an integral and wholesome spirituality? Grace protects the ecology of the human body.

6.   Grace and its Transforming Effects on the World

Grace affects and changes the human person but the objective order of the world remains the same. The body is still prone to sickness and pain. .Although Grace cannot change the objective world, it does change the secularized world. Grace changes the world of sin to a world of love.  Grace makes possible for God’s providential love to work in nature, history, miracles, science, culture, art and ordinary events.  Through grace, we recognize God’s presence in our world and in our lives.  Hence, grace sanctifies the world at its very foundation and the material world is blessed in Christ.  Through grace, the world finds its meaning in Christ through the proper stewardship of man.

Healing is a Process

By Rev Fr William Goh

Single CD

Sin affects not just the darkness of the intellect and the weakness of the will, but it also causes the emotions, the spirit and body of man to suffer injury. Hence, healing involves all the dimensions of the human person, intellect, will, emotions, spirit and the body. Consequently, when we seek healing, we need to restore equilibrium to all these aspects of the human person.  However, because of a lack of holistic lifestyle, habitual sins and addiction to vices, many of us are like the Parable of the Two Sons.  Whilst we desire to live a righteous life, we find ourselves falling back to our old way of life.  This is particularly frustrating, especially when one sincerely wants to live the new life of Christ in the Spirit., but his past keeps coming back to haunt him, hindering him from living a life of grace. This talk will help us to be patient with ourselves and with others who are apparently not answering the call to conversion.

Healing Miracles

By Rev Fr William Goh

Set of 4 cds

1.  The Phenomenon of Healing

The modern intellectuals in this scientific and technological age consider healing services as a return to the magic mentality of the primitive.  When it comes to healing, medicine has replaced miracles these days.  Even in the official Church, the attitude towards miracles is one of reservation and caution.  Yet, stories of healings and miracles abound in scriptures and in the history of the Church.  This talk examines this phenomenon of healing and establishes the basis for healing miracles in the Christian Faith.

2.  The Nature of Healing Miracles

For most faithful, there is no systematic attempt to distinguish healings that are miraculous from those that take place naturally.  What matters is that the person is healed and the fact that Christ has come to heal our ills.  Those in the renewal believe that because the Lord is alive today as in the past, He is still healing us today.  Salvation is always for the entire man, including his body and not just for his soul.  This talk will study the nature of healing miracles.

3.  The Pastoral Approach to the Healing Ministry

What should be our attitude towards healing?  How does the exercise of healing take place?  What are the dispositions necessary for the exercise of the gift of healing and to receive healing?  What is the nature of healing prayers?  What are the Church’s disciplinary norms with regard to the ministry of healing?  These are some of the questions that will be dealt with in this talk.

4.  Verification of Healing Miracles and the Healing Ministry

How can we verify that indeed God has intervened in the healings that have taken place?  In asking this question, we are faced with the difficult task of defining what a miracle is, since the present definition of miracle as an exception to the laws of nature belongs to a culture of medical science different from that as understood by biblical and the ordinary man.  In this situation, to emphasize the importance of scientific verification would be to downplay the importance of the cure as an event that is humanly and spiritually significant.  Still, some verification process is in order as it helps to prevent abuses and credulity.  What then would be the revised criteria to examine the truth of healing miracles?

Healing the Heart Through Suffering

By Rev Fr William Goh

Single CD

Suffering is a mystery of life.  No one likes to suffer.  But Jesus Himself, too, had to suffer; not on account of His sins but the sins of others.  Jesus did not ask why He had to suffer, but embraced suffering as part of the mysterious providential plan of God.  Suffering is pedagogical in coming to know ourselves. Through suffering, we come to learn obedience, love, patience and forgiveness.  When suffering is integrated into our lives and embraced in faith, such suffering heals the heart as well.  Most of all, sharing in the suffering of Christ, we too will attain eternal salvation and share in the glory of Christ.

Holiness through Purification of the Senses and the Spirit

By Rev Fr William Goh
Set of 3 cds

Talk I: Active Purification of the External and Internal Senses
Holiness consists of arriving at an intimate union with God. Winning victory against sin is only the beginning of holiness. Growing in holiness requires that we purify the soul and the body from all imperfections and defects. This entails purifying our external and internal senses, namely, our earthly/sensual passions; the intellect and will through our efforts with the grace of God.

Talk 2: Active Purification Of The Passions, Intellect and Will
Talk 1 dealt with the purification of the external senses. However, because the external senses influence the internal senses, namely, the imagination and the memory, we must also purify these senses as well. Following which, we must then purify our passions. But to attain Christian perfection and holiness, we must reach the depth of one’s spirit by rectifying the deviations of the intellect and will. This talk seeks to explain how the spiritual faculties can also be purified.

Talk 3: Passive Purification
To attain perfection in holiness, one must try to purify his mind and body. However, perfection in holiness is possible only when God Himself purifies us by allowing us to experience extreme spiritual dryness (otherwise known as the Night of the Spirit), and suffer before the presence of God’s holiness because of our sinfulness (Night of the Senses). Such was the experience of Jesus at the cross, when He was separated from His Father on account of our sins

Holy Spirit As Love

By Rev Fr William Goh
Set of 3 cds

Talk 1: The Holy Spirit As The Love Of God
Who is the Holy Spirit? For many, He appears to be an illusive third person in the Holy Trinity. We can feel Him but cannot see Him. This is because He is God’s love in person. He is in His very person the reciprocal love of the Father and the Son, the mutual gift of love between them. Hence, the Holy Spirit expresses the innermost nature of God as self-communicating love. This love in God is not kept within the Holy Trinity, but is poured out into the world through the Holy Spirit.

Talk 2: The Holy Spirit Enables Us To Experience The Love Of God Personally
In this session, we focus on what the Holy Spirit does. The Holy Spirit is the key to encountering the Risen Christ, who brings us to the Father. Only He can reveal to us the depth of God’s love, since He is the love of God in person. Consciousness of the presence of the Holy Spirit is also consciousness of the love of God and the love shared between the Father and the Son. Without knowing the Holy Spirit in person, we cannot know the heart and mind of the Father and the Son.

Talk 3: The Holy Spirit Empowers Us To Love In Christ
We all love at least something or someone. But what and how should we love so that we can be truly happy? The truth is that we do not know what and how to love as we ought, because of our fallen nature. We confuse self-love with the true meaning of love. Authentic love sets a person free when his love is directed at God and his fellowmen. But we cannot love selflessly unless someone loves us first. The source and capacity for love is founded not only on the fact, but also on the experience, of God’s love. This love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
